Stonetown Waterfront Revitalization, Zanzibar

Stonetown Waterfront Revitalization, Zanzibar

The revitalization and restoration of this historic waterfront park and foreshore buildings (many of them historic and /or cultural landmarks has been undertaken by the AKDN and its affiliated organizations. A key element of this strategy was the development of a five star Serena hotel within the fabric of this waterfront. A careful redesign of the public open space, foreshore road and sea wall structures was also undertaken as well as the restoration of key buildings. An analysis of how the public open space provided a platform for small scale start-up businesses to get established was undertaken and then the restoration design and construction
reinforced and supported those activities.

The restoration strategy focused on six action areas, each with its own constituency, technical complexity and set of priorities. The overall master plan ensured that the parts remained integrated with the overall intent but could be implemented at their own schedule. The Client had been working in Stone Town for several years and these six public oriented initiatives were the counterpart to several private investments that had been made by the same Client.

An old banyan tree has provided shade to boat builders for generations on this working waterfront.  Its roots were protected as part of the waterfront restoration initiatives.
