This auto-oriented medical campus was experiencing rapid growth with a large number of surface parking lots that were no longer the best use of the land, although vital for the functioning of the institutions located there. Being able to walk from one facility to another was problematic. A key objective of the master plan was to build new medical facilities on surface parking areas but to also minimize the need for building new multi-story parking structures. By rationalizing the parking need, instituting more accessible public transit and careful phasing of new construction the area will be transformed into a pedestrian oriented neighborhood with a balance between easy access and a compact walk-able neighborhood.
